Ted Cruz calls Sam Smith’s Grammy performance “evil”

Sunday night’s 65th Annual Grammy Awards show was full of memorable performances from many artists; however, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, judged one of those performances to be “evil.”

As part of the Grammys, Sam Smith and Kim Petras performed their song “Unholy” with Satan-themed choreography. Smith performed in a top hat with two devil horns while the stage was filled with red lighting and flames lit up the background Petras dancing in a cage.

Cruz expressed his displeasure with the performance on Twitter.

Cruz’s tweet was a response to a post by Liz Wheeler, a conservative podcast host. Wheeler’s initial post was a complaint, stating that the performance was teaching kids to worship Satan.

Regardless of Cruz and Wheeler’s opinions, Smith and Petras made history as Petras is the first transgender woman to win the Grammy for best pop duo/group performance.

There is a long history of Satan appearing in literature, music and popular culture — everything from Dante Alighieri’s “Inferno” to the Rolling Stones’ classic “Sympathy for the Devil” and Washington Irving’s “The Devil and Tom Walker.”
