Audio Traditions Included, a new neighborhood not-for-earnings opera business, is ambitiously bringing some classical society to this year’s Orlando Fringe in the form of Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium. Madame Flora (Natalie Doliner at the press preview Angeliz Bula at find displays) is a fraudulent psychic who fleeces grieving people with the help of her daughter Monica (Aleksandra Vargas, alternating with Katy Garner) and mute servant Toby (Tyler Rate). When one particular of Flora’s pseudo-spirits seemingly manifests in a significantly much more actual physical kind than she expected, the charlatan’s drunken descent from deviousness into delirium proves deliciously operatic in this tidy little gothic tragedy.
Centered on the media preview, the entire cast is admirably ready to fill the Margeson’s rafters with no benefit of microphone amplification, creating Menotti’s haunting harmonies audible previously mentioned new music director Sergei Kossenko’s emotive keyboard accompaniment. I do would like that The Medium was staged in a much more intimate area than the arena-like Orange Location, so that they could reproduce some of the fortuneteller’s flim-flam results. Even without having that immersive factor, this production of The Medium is nonetheless a well-sung slice of serious artwork I hope it will not get neglected amid a sea of more frivolous fare.
