‘Jackass Forever’ opens atop box office with $23.5M

LOS ANGELES (CNS) — “Jackass Forever” opened at the top of the box office this weekend, grossing $23.5 million Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

The film — the latest in a line of big-screen adaptations of an MTV television show that first aired in 2000 — is being condemned by PETA for several scenes of apparent animal abuse. Neither the producers nor star Johnny Knoxville has responded to the complaints.

The space disaster film “Moonfall” opened in second place with $10 million, Comscore reported.

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” was a close third with $9.6 million, bringing its eight-week domestic total to $748 million, the fourth highest total of any film.

“Scream” was fourth with $4.7 million in its fourth week, followed by “Sing 2,” which grossed $4.1 million in its seventh week in theaters.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “The King’s Man” ($1.1 million), “Redeeming Love” ($1 million), “American Underdog” ($800,000), “The 355” ($700,000) and “The Wolf and the Lion” ($675,000).
