TEXAS — “The Queen of Tejano music,” Selena Quintanilla Pérez’s birthday is April 16, and the late Texas native songstress would have been celebrating 51 years.
Each year, the cherished singer’s birthday is recognized as “Selena Day.” Although Selena’s departure was rooted in a 1995 theft and murder, with the president of her fan club fatally shooting her after being fired for stealing funds from the singer, her legacy lives on.
Selena’s popularity is still going strong after her death, with her father, Abraham Quintanilla, teasing a new album with unreleased material arranged by AB Quintanilla, her brother. The album could be released sometime in April.
Until then, Texans will rally together to celebrate Selena’s birthday on Saturday.
